Grossformatige Platten durchziehen den Ausstellungsraum. Sie scheinen hier nur zwischengelagert. Requisiten, deren eigentlicher Auftritt erst bevorsteht. Requisiten haben viele Funktionen. In ihrem Hauptzweck als Teile eines Dramas, sind sie schnell vergessen, doch per Definition sind sie unbedingt notwendig, ja unentbehrlich. Gemeinsam mit einer Skulptur aus Zaunelementen bilden sie eine abstrakte Landschaft, schemenhaft mit Gitter- und Zaunmustern besprayt. Sie erfordern eine genauere Betrachtung.
Nach der zweijährigen Residency in der BINZ39 zog Val Minnig zurück in den Heimatkanton Graubünden, ins Engadin. Gemeinsam mit Cathrin Jarema gründeten sie das Kollektiv Gay Peppy, zu dem auch die Podenco-Hündin Gamba und seit kurzem der Welpe Guzzi gehören. Wie auf Wanderwergen verloren, säumen die von Gay Peppy veränderten Kleidungsstücke die Panels. Auf ihnen finden sich Haare, Zotteln und Kunstfell, applizierte Illustrationen mit Zügeln, Ketten, Sattelzeug, Pferdegeschirr. Ergänzt ist die Gesamtinstallation mit Trockenblumen, Strohhalmen und Ästen. Auf Fotos ist eine Figur zu erkennen, die durch Dickicht, Wälder und Wiesen streicht. Der Gay Peppy Country Chic ist unverblümt, direkt.
In diesem Look tritt der titelgebende Hauptdarsteller Lonely Cowboy in den Raum. In pastoraler Art ist er der Herr der Herde, führt diese von Stall zum Gatter, kennt das Land wie seine Westentasche, stets wachsam um mögliche Feinde. Der Cowboy als ein Set von Andeutungen, von Oberflächen, ein Genre. Leder, Haut, Wind, Sand, Horizont. Style ist zentral. Stiefel, Hut, Jeans, Gürtel, Pistole, Pose, zugleich funktional und zutiefst männlich. Gesetz, Gewalt, Freiheit, Identität.
Im historischen Cowboy findet sich die romantische Idee des Ruralen und Naturnahen als idyllischem Gegenkonzept zum Urbanen wieder. Er ist eine liminale Figur, einerseits verbunden mit Land und Tier, andererseits im Dienste von Kultivierung und Zivilisation unterwegs. Nicht nur in seiner Bezeichnung hat der Cowboy eine enge Beziehung zu Tieren, er ist eine Chimäre, ein sprachliches Mischwesen. Ohne Kühe, ohne Pferd ist er aufgeschmissen, ein boy. Im Sinne von Donna Haraway steht er als Symbol für eine unmittelbare Beziehung zu Tieren, zur Natur, zu dem “mehr-als-Menschlichen”. Aus Haraways eigener Beziehung zu ihrem Hund Cayenne Pepper beschreibt sie im Companion Species Manifesto das gemeinsame Wachsen von Mensch und Tier, die sich gegenseitig formen und beeinflussen, biologisch, emotional und ethisch. Ein Aufruf zu einer loser(en) Betrachtung der Kategorisierung des Rationalen und des Bestialischen. In einer queeren Umdeutung ist der Cowboy die Dekonstruktion einer hypermaskulinen, patriarchalen, phallozentrischen und natürlich heteronormativen Ideologie. Die Aufmerksamkeit von Gay Peppy liegt in den Verflechtungen dieser Ansammlungen. In den Wertesystemen und Kategorisierungen zwischen Stadt und Land, Tier und Mensch, vernakulärer und hoher Kultur, gay und straight. Ein Cocktail von Codes und Ausstattungen und ein Vorschlag für ein Stück, das aus Freiheit, Weite, care und massgeblich Gay Peppy besteht.

Val Minnig (*1991) ist Schweizer Kunstschaffende, die in Zürich und Scuol lebt und arbeitet. Vals künstlerische Praxis beschäftigt sich mit Themen wie Macht, Kontrolle, Mensch-Tier-Beziehungen und dem Aufbrechen gewohnter sozialer Strukturen. Val arbeitet häufig ortsspezifisch und entwickelt Installationen aus einfachen oder gefundenen Materialien, die durch ihre fragile Qualität auffallen. Ausstellungen u. a. in der Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen (adult/sensitive, 2021), Werkschau des Kantons Zürich, Museum Langmatt. Minnig war von 2022-2024 Stipendiat:in der Stiftung BINZ39, die Ausstellung Lonely Cowboy ist die Abschlussausstellung.
Cathrin Jarema (*1989, Zürich) ist eine multidisziplinäre Künstler*in und Kurator*in, lebt und arbeitet zwischen Brüssel und Tarasp. Cathrins künstlerische Praxis umfasst Performances, audiovisuelle Installationen, Interventionen, Texte, Skulpturen und Zeichnungen. Ein zentrales Interesse liegt in der Untersuchung von Sprache als Werkzeug und Grundlage für „soziale Choreografie“, also wie sich persönliche Erfahrung, soziale und politische Wirklichkeit verschränken und narrative Strukturen formen. Humor spielt eine wiederkehrende Rolle in Cathrins Arbeit als Mittel zur Reflexion, Kritik und als Strategie zum Aufbrechen gewohnter Wahrnehmungsmuster. Gemeinsam mit Clifford E. Bruckmann war Jarema Mitbegründer*in und Co-Leiter*in des Kunstraums Hamlet in Zürich-Oerlikon (2018-2022). Ausstellungen u.a. unanimous consent (Zürich, CH), Haus Konstruktiv (Zürich, CH), Volksroom (Brüssel, BE), deMarkten (Brüssel, BE) und PERIODE (Berlin, DE).
Gamba Podenco (*2015, Úbeda) blickt auf eine zehnjährige Karriere als Schauspielerin und Künstlerin zurück und geniesst nun ihren Ruhestand in den Bergen.

Large-scale panels are lined throughout the exhibition space. They seem temporarily stored here, props waiting for their actual show time. Props serve many functions. In their main role as parts of a drama, they are quickly forgotten, yet by definition they are essential, indispensable even. Together with a sculpture made of fencing elements they form an abstract landscape, hazily sprayed with grid and fence patterns. They call for closer inspection.
After their two-year residency at BINZ39, Val Minnig moved to their home canton of Graubünden, to the Engadin. Together with Cathrin Jarema they founded the collective Gay Peppy, which also includes the Podenco dog Gamba and, more recently, the puppy Guzzi. Like lost items on hiking trails, garments altered by Gay Peppy line the panels. Adorned with hair, tassels and faux fur, appliquéd illustrations of reins, chains, saddlery, horse tack. The installation is complemented by dried flowers, straw and branches and photographs, a figure can be seen moving through undergrowth, woods and meadows. The Gay Peppy Country Chic is frank, direct. In this look, the title character Lonely Cowboy enters the scene. Pastoral in manner, he is a lord of the herd, leading them from stable to gate, knowing the land like the back of his hand, watchful for potential foes. The cowboy is a set of references, of surfaces, a genre. Leather, skin, wind, sand, horizon. The style is fundamental. Boots, hat, jeans, belt, pistol, pose, both functional and profoundly masculine. Law, violence, freedom, identity.
In the historical cowboy we find the romantic idea of the rural and nature-bound as an idyllic counter-image to the urban. He is the liminal type, at once connected to land and animal, yet also serving cultivation and civilisation. Not only in name does the cowboy have a close relationship to animals, he is a chimera, a linguistic hybrid. Without cows, without a horse, he’s just a boy. In Donna Haraway’s sense, he stands as a symbol of an immediate relationship with animals and nature, the “more-than-human”. In The Companion Species Manifesto, Haraway describes, through her own relationship with her dog Cayenne Pepper, the mutual growth of human and animal, how they shape and influence one another biologically, emotionally and ethically. A calling for a reconsideration of the tight boundaries that differentiate the rational and the bestial. In a queer reinterpretation, the cowboy becomes a deconstruction of a hypermasculine, patriarchal, phallocentric, and of course, heteronormative ideology.
Gay Peppy’s attention lies in the entanglements of these constellations, in the value systems and categorizations betweencity and countryside, animal and human, vernacular and high culture, gay and straight. A cocktail of codes and accessories, and a proposal for a play composed of freedom, vastness, care, and, mostly, Gay Peppy.

Val Minnig (*1991) is a Swiss artist living and working in Zurich and Scuol. Val’s artistic practice engages with themes such as power, control, human–animal relations, and the breaking of established social structures. Val often works site-specifically, creating installations from simple or found materials notable for their fragile quality. Exhibitions include Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen (adult/sensitive, 2021), Werkschau des Kantons Zürich, and Museum Langmatt. Minnig was a BINZ39 Foundation fellow from 2022–2024; Lonely Cowboy marks the conclusion of this residency.
Cathrin Jarema (*1989, Zurich) is a multidisciplinary artist and curator living and working between Brussels and Tarasp. Cathrin’s artistic practice encompasses performance, audiovisual installations, interventions, texts, sculptures and drawings. A central focus lies on language as a tool and foundation for “social choreography”—the ways in which personal experience, social and political realities intertwine and shape narrative structures. Humour recurs in Cathrin’s work as a means of reflection, critique, and as a strategy for disrupting habitual patterns of perception. Together with Clifford E. Bruckmann, Jarema co-founded and co-directed the art space Hamlet in Zurich-Oerlikon (2018–2022). Exhibitions include unanimous consent (Zurich, CH), Haus Konstruktiv (Zurich, CH), Volksroom (Brussels, BE), deMarkten (Brussels, BE), and PERIODE (Berlin, DE).
Gamba Podenco (*2015, Úbeda) looks back on a ten-year career as an actress and artist and now enjoys her retirement in the mountains.
